CHAPTER EIGHT

I ate nothing but bananas for breakfast. Normal, I thought. So did my sisters and the boys from Newport. Wren, masculine and average height with brown hair and ruddy skin today, sat with a bowl of berries on granola and reassured me. Until a patter of cold laughter like hail reigned around me.

Sophia and the others from Aventurine section stood at my elbow. Mirth lit her face like moonlight. Behind her, Brady arched one perfectly shaped eyebrow, and Emi tossed a glossy lock of hair over one shoulder.

“Can you get any more stereotypical than a dragon short a few scales eating a baby's breakfast?”

I didn’t wonder why such pretty people carried such ill will. Beautiful berries were nearly always the most toxic out in nature. Most confusing was why bother taking time to unleash it on little old me.

Intending to avoid their mistake, I turned away, removing the banana’s peel. Most of my tablemates also said nothing. Either I'd lucked out and chosen the right social response or they backed me up.

Uri glared down at his half-eaten omelet as the only exception, signing furiously to Petrichor. Many of the gestures would have been banned on television.

Sophia yawned and ignored the exchange, although for all I knew she understood ASL. Brady and Emi followed that lead.

It would have worked, but Steven emerged from the line with his tray, freezing in place to stare at Uri’s hands. Sophia didn’t let that slide.

“Come along, Steven. You can’t possibly want to sit with these damaged goods. Or were you lying about not being a slippery snake?”

Steven’s hands shook, sloshing milk from his extra-large cereal bowl onto his tray and sprinkling his Starfleet Academy shirt. The paler patches of skin on his face reddened. Sophia turned away. Steven moved to follow but paused to glance at Wren.

“Uh, I'm going.”

Wren sighed but said nothing. Sophia turned, tapping her foot.

“Did I give you permission to talk to that glorified wicker man?”

“No, but he’s in our sect—”

A laugh flopped out of her like a fish out of water.

“Tree Thing’s not welcome with us outside the classroom, Steven. Follow us now or never.”

Steven’s feet moved so abruptly that his cereal milk sloshed again. I sensed he’d been compelled but couldn’t do anything about it.

“You can sit with us any time you’d like, Wren. Don’t worry, Foul Fowls and their cling-ons aren’t welcome with us,” Scald declared.

Wren only nodded.

Sofia stuck her nose in the air and sauntered away with her entourage following her. Steven followed like the kids in the Harcourts’ original folklore account of the Pied Piper.

“I’m already sick of living in mean girl city.” Brackish sighed.

Scald giggled, then tapped a rhythm on the table with two pencils. The altercation had inspired one of her trademark song parodies, to the tune of an old Blaine Harcourt favorite called Zoot Suit Riot.

“Mean girl city, bet she sneaks out and drinks beer! Mean girl city, don't wanna see her face around here. Mean girl city, none of us are calling her dear.
